Breaking Down Breaking Ground
Article by Ricky Rios
What happens when two worlds make an effort to collide? Well, the Breaking Ground group is doing just that. Led by Richard Gorham, Breaking Ground’s main purpose is to combine the ideas of an urban, underachieving school like Lawrence High School with one of the top high schools in the country, Phillips Academy Andover. Through the events that were made, relationships were built between these two schools, showing that both communities were not so different after all. Some issues the program has dealt with are stereotypes and perception. “Most people think Phillips Academy is filled with rich, snobby white kids, but we are much more than that,” says Harry Wright from PA. The group does various activities, such as scavenger hunts and artistic collaborations, and then enjoys a nice lunch while mingling. As Natalie Imbruglia once said, “It’s good to put yourself in other people’s skin once in awhile.”

Trial and Error: LHS Mock Trial Team makes it to tie-breaker round!

Article by Zachary Marshall

This year thirteen Lawrence High School students participated in the Massachusetts Mock Trial competition. Mock Trial is a nationwide competition in which students take on the role of witnesses and lawyers presenting a case to a judge in a courtroom setting. In doing this, students gain public speaking, listening, and debating skills as well as an understanding of the law. This year, led by former lawyer and current PFA English teacher, Mary DeFelice, the group successfully won three trials against various schools in the area. They faced a tiebreaker round on Friday, March 1st, 2013 against Lexington in which their journey ended. It has been said that they made it further than most first year team ever have. The team was happy to have the opportunity and cannot wait till next year to go all the way.image
