What’s Good in the Hood is a social venture run by high school students who are committed to changing how the world views their city: Lawrence, MA. WGITH began in 2009 when its founder, Gladys Gitau, won a social entrepreneurship contest and a $1,500 grant to start a paper about the positive things happening in Lawrence. Now, Gladys and the WGITH team have published five issues and counting. They volunteer at community events and encourage other youth to participate through media outlets, such as Facebook and Twitter. In April 2011, the group was awarded the Emerging Young Leaders Award by the Lawrence School Committee. Then in the summer of 2011, they also won the Storytellers For Good documentary contest which resulted in the filming of their own documentary in December. What’s Good in the Hood gains funding to print their publication by selling ads to local businesses and organizations.

Union St., Lawrence, M.A. – In 1888, a bridge was constructed by one of the most significant bridge companies in Massachusetts, Boston Bridge Works. The Duck Bridge has great significance not only because it connects the southern and northern regions of Lawrence, but also because it is the oldest double-intersection warren through truss in the State of Massachusetts Department of Public Works purview. Also it is one of the oldest attached bridges in the State of Massachusetts. The Duck Bridge holds an extreme necessity, both visually and historically, as a piece of great industrial architecture within the City of Lawrence, Massachusetts.

This historically significant bridge, however, was taken under Massachusetts Department of Public Works, Boston, for reconstruction. The budget set for reconstruction was $19.9 million dollars, but only $17.9 million was actually spent on it. Reconstruction included rehabilitating portions of the existing piers and abutments, installing new floor beams and a deck made out of a reinforced steel and concrete, and creating two travel lanes with shoulders and sidewalks built on both sides of the bridge. The reconstruction caused many traffic and delay issues as the residents of Lawrence were forced to take alternate routes in and around the city in order to go from the Southern side to the Northern side of Lawrence.

On October, 2012, the Duck Bridge was finalized and completed. It was open six months ahead of schedule. The opening of the bridge brought excitement and comfort to many Lawrence residents who suffered from delays and traffic issues during the reconstruction.

The Senior ‘13 Posse!
Article by Juan Jose...

The Senior ‘13 Posse!

Article by Juan Jose Bernabe

Lawrence – on January 3rd 2013, three bright Lawrence students were awarded with the Posse Scholarship, a full tuition scholarship to one of the tops colleges and universities in the United States.

This charming experience started at the beginning of October with a first round interview with over 1,460 students from the entire state of Massachusetts. Only five students achieved the awaited goal of becoming a finalist for the Posse Scholarship. Juan Jose Bernabe, Jahicol Baralt, Nalyn Yim, Austin Genett and Saddan Genao, were the only ones battling from Lawrence, Massachusetts to achieve this scholarship. However, out of this select group of young leader only three succeed and got to accomplish their goal. These young leaders are Juan Jose Bernabe from the Performing and Fine Arts High School, Jahicol Baralt from the Performing and Fine Arts and Saddan Genao from Central Catholic High School. These young individuals not only have the opportunity to attend one of the top colleges and universities in the country, but they also have become part of a selective group of young leaders from around the entire nation that are part of this Posse movement. $140,000 was giving to these three students to pay for four years, full tuition, to Denison University and Union College. Now the race begins for these three young leaders; college is right around the corner and their lives are about to change drastically.

These students do not only represented Lawrence High School and Central Catholic; they represent the so called “City of Damned!” Their participation and accomplishments made these students bring the reputation of the City of Lawrence to higher standards. “Being a Posse Scholar for me is a way of showing my community that hard works pays off, and having the opportunity to open myself to another environment at Denison would be life changing.” Saddan Genao’s words were inspirational and he surely will make a difference in our community alongside the other two Posse Scholars.

Breaking Down Breaking Ground
Article by Ricky Rios
What...

Breaking Down Breaking Ground

Article by Ricky Rios

What happens when two worlds make an effort to collide? Well, the Breaking Ground group is doing just that. Led by Richard Gorham, Breaking Ground’s main purpose is to combine the ideas of an urban, underachieving school like Lawrence High School with one of the top high schools in the country, Phillips Academy Andover. Through the events that were made, relationships were built between these two schools, showing that both communities were not so different after all. Some issues the program has dealt with are stereotypes and perception. “Most people think Phillips Academy is filled with rich, snobby white kids, but we are much more than that,” says Harry Wright from PA. The group does various activities, such as scavenger hunts and artistic collaborations, and then enjoys a nice lunch while mingling. As Natalie Imbruglia once said, “It’s good to put yourself in other people’s skin once in awhile.”

Trial and Error: LHS Mock Trial Team makes it to tie-breaker round!

Article by Zachary Marshall

This year thirteen Lawrence High School students participated in the Massachusetts Mock Trial competition. Mock Trial is a nationwide competition in which students take on the role of witnesses and lawyers presenting a case to a judge in a courtroom setting. In doing this, students gain public speaking, listening, and debating skills as well as an understanding of the law. This year, led by former lawyer and current PFA English teacher, Mary DeFelice, the group successfully won three trials against various schools in the area. They faced a tiebreaker round on Friday, March 1st, 2013 against Lexington in which their journey ended. It has been said that they made it further than most first year team ever have. The team was happy to have the opportunity and cannot wait till next year to go all the way.

Ohmygosh. Felix Sanchez. This guy made me cry when he cried….

At the Beijing Olympics, the morning of the preliminary heat, he got the news that his grandma had died. He ran, but ended up doing horribly. He cried the whole day. He vowed that he would win a medal for her before he retired. And today in London, he won the gold. That picture on the ground is of himself and his grandma.

[x]

Oh man everyone in my country cried with him ;_;

As soon as he finished the race, he took out the picture of his grandma and kissed it. So many feels ;_____;

For the Dominicans.
